TB0401 Overcoming Backlash Adjustment Limitation

On the Hepco rack / pinion / journal system, it is possible to get into a situation where no more adjustment is available using the motor mounts.

Problem

On the Hepco rack / pinion / journal system, it is possible to get into a situation where no more adjustment is available using the motor mounts. This happens due to a small amount of wear on all of the components, with a nett effect of the motor sitting further out of mesh from the rack, particularly on older machines.

Solution

Check which side the eccentric journals are mounted on. If they are on the rack / pinion side,

swap them over to the other side.

The correct Hepco recommended side is for the concentric bearings to be on the rack side

This means that if the journals now wear, the eccentric journals can take up the slack, and the pinion will move into mesh with the rack. Photo shows the assembly after the journal position was swapped at Glazerite.
