Problem

On Zebra ZD620, ZD420, ZD421 printers in peel-off mode, the labels do not peel off cleanly and bunch up on the reel

Root Cause

There is a compatibility issue between the label media and the Zebra ZD printer peeler. This was proven by testing several different alternative media types and selecting a compatible version at the end of 2021

Supply Chain Complication

In May 2022 the media used to solve this problem was subject to a supply chain issue for the raw material from the original manufacturer in Finland.

This forced a temprorary switch back to the original media in June 2022 to maintain supply of labels to customers

Solutions

The 2021 replacement media type is the main solution to this problem. The stocks of the old media type were exhausted by March 2022.

With the supply chain complication, however, the original problem is set to return.

The temprary solution to this is to set the printer up in tear-off mode. This is easily done by simply not feeding the label backing back through the peel off system. Regrettably this is the only solution for now until the supply chain can be reinstated, hopefully by the end of 2022.

Material Identification

A system is in place to identify the material used on a reel of labels. This has been done using a combination of a change in the reel design (with a line) and the use of a dayglow marker dot

...The dot was needed to identify the label material type while existing core stock was exhausted.
